The Downtown Hawley Partnership is pleased to announce the Hawley BikeShare, which provides day rental of bicycles – free of charge – to residents and visitors alike.

Purchased through the generosity of the members of the Downtown Hawley Partnership, these new bicycles are available in two sizes, in both men and women’s styles, and are geared for ease of use. Bikes will be available at 4 convenient locations throughout Hawley: AM Skier Insurance, The Settlers Inn, the Ledges Hotel and Lake Region Fitness at the Hawley Silk Mill. The bikes come complete with a helmet, lock, and removable basket for carrying purchases from local shops.

Hawley BikeShare is designed to encourage people to explore all the community has to offer; to visit the local businesses and explore a little further afield. Biking provides a connection to the community and to the natural beauty of the area. And because it’s people-powered, it’s a sustainable – and healthy — way to see the sights. Plus, it is just plain fun! Recapture the joy of biking you had as a child, or perhaps join your kids for a family outing.

The rules are simple. An interested individual simply provides a copy of his or her driver’s license (or other photo ID), signs a waiver and rental agreement holding the Partnership harmless in the event of injury and accepting responsibility for the cost of any and all damages. Bicycles need to be returned by dusk the same day. Though rentals are initially limited to those over 18 years of age, depending on the response, the program may be extended in the future to those over 16 years of age.

The Partnership will also be hosting a bicycle rodeo August 17 at 5pm in Bingham Park/Park Place Hawley. This event offers kids of all ages a chance to try out their cycling skills and learn how to ride safely. Experts will also be on hand with helpful instructions on bicycle maintenance, tune-ups and tips.

The Partnership reminds motorists throughout the region to Share the Road. It is not only prudent, but also the law. Earlier in 2012 a new Pennsylvania law went into effect stating that motorists must give bikers 4 feet of space when passing. If motorists cannot do so safely, they must wait to pass.

Hawley BikeShare is modeled after programs around the world, and locally after the successful program in Wilkes-Barre. Ongoing maintenance of the bikes is provided by Around Town Bicycles (www.ATownBikes.com) and by the generous support of 12 sponsors (each of the sponsors is highlighted on the bike’s baskets).

The Downtown Hawley Partnership is comprised of Hawley area businesses, organizations and individuals working together to bring cohesiveness, aesthetics, and structure to the growth and development of downtown Hawley.
